Knock Knock: Branding & Development for a Community Platform
BETAKnock Knock wasn’t born from a marketing plan, but from a shared observation among freelancers and independent professionals sitting around the same table: even when well surrounded on paper (a coworking space, a business incubator, a professional network) you often remain alone when facing the real questions of entrepreneurship. How do you start? Which group should you join? Is it worth investing in yet another network? Where can you find someone who’s already been through it? These questions, quietly asked for years, gave rise to this volunteer project led by ideanest.
Knock Knock is a mutual-support platform for entrepreneurs, designed to connect people carrying a project. Whether already established in entrepreneurship or not, Knock Knock opens its door to the curious, to career changers, and to those who want to share their experience.
The Challenge
Knock Knock has existed in our minds for two years, with several twists along the way. The original project envisioned a highly polished tool requiring fundind… but ultimately never came through. Rather than abandoning the idea, the team chose to scale it down: starting again from a more modest core, but staying true to the original intent : create a mutual support in entrepreneurship.
But building a community isn’t just about assembling a tool. The real challenge of Knock Knock lies in holding three tensions at once:
Build a community, then keep it alive. A tool alone doesn’t make a community. Features (listings, forum, directory, events) need to be designed to give people real reasons to come back, to respond, to reconnect — not just to sign up once.
Stay as independent as possible. The choice was to avoid all-in-one “community” plugins and dependencies on external SaaS tools, in favor of custom development on a WordPress base. More upfront work, but a tool that we understand, control, and can evolve without depending on a third party over 5 to 10 years, not just 18 months.
Stay as lightweight as possible. Independence doesn’t mean heaviness. The platform needs to stay fast, clean, free of trackers and unnecessary third-party tools. An approach that feels consistent with the project’s “mutual support” spirit, rather than a data-exploitation logic.
Knock Knock deliberately starts small: an open door to a core group of members, real exchanges, a V1 designed to be listened to and refined before expanding. Further development and new features (Knock Knock Live, a partial paid model after the first six free months…) will be built based on feedback from this first community, rather than on assumptions set in advance.
Behind the name, a promise
Knock Knock isn’t just a play on words. It’s a rhythm: two knocks, a pause, a wait. Knocking on a door is a gesture you dare to make because you know (or hope) someone will answer. The name carries that promise: behind the door, there’s a living community, not silence. The nod to “knock knock” jokes is intentional, almost claimed outright: it breaks the ice, brings a smile, and always circles back to the same idea : you’re not knocking into the void, someone answers.
A story still being written
The project has been maturing for two years, detours included. What exists today isn’t the result of a fixed plan, but a deliberately honest V1, designed to grow together with the people who bring it to life.
And what about you?
Are you carrying a project forward mostly on your own, unable to find someone who truly understands what it takes? Have you been thinking about it for a while, without knowing where to start or who to talk to? Have you changed paths or are you wondering if you should?
We often walk these paths in parallel, each on our own. Knock Knock exists so these journeys can finally cross, for those moments: not for a specific box to check, but for the question we don’t always dare to ask out loud.
